Social Networking and Gay Slurs

I have 207 friends on Facebook. I follow 137 people on Twitter, and 125 people follow me. I have 23 friends on Foursquare. I can pretty much vouch for each and every one of them. (Though I admit, I’ve been a little looser on accepting Facebook friends than I initially intended, and with Twitter most of those I follow are not people I know personally).

I would not tolerate any one of those 300 or so people using racist, sexist, or homophobic language. If their Facebook status, Facebook comment, Tweet, or Foursquare shout contained such nonsense, I’d delete it.

And I’m here to say that I’m disappointed by certain Facebook friends — younger by decades almost to a person — who do tolerate bullshit gay slurs in comments on their posts. Let this serve as notice: If your friends use gay slurs in your posts and they show up on my wall, I will hide your posts or de-friend you. And starting tomorrow, since it isn’t fair to call you out by name without such notice as this, I will be calling you out by name on whatever platform your friends’ slurs appeared, and probably on this blog as well.

The company you keep is reflective of who you are. Please don’t let ignorant assholes attach offensive things to your social networking posts without either calling them on it or deleting their comments. It’s hurtful to let them stand and to let them show up on my feed. You know who you are.
